Final Filming Update: Assisi, Perugia and One Last Day in Rome

I’m writing this from the airport lounge in Rome, waiting for my flight home. The trip is now finished, and the last three days were some of the busiest of the whole trip. I filmed in Assisi, Perugia and Rome, with a mix of festival crowds, classic cars, rain, bike rides, ancient roads and one unfortunate lens problem on my final evening walk.

May 9th — A Frustrating Day in Assisi, Then a Car Show in Perugia

Drove back to Assisi to film the main walk, starting at 12:25 near the Basilica. It went well until I tried to come back through the main piazza and got blocked — turns out the festival required a ticket. I waited about an hour along the barricade thinking I could at least film the procession, but when it finally started, I was not in a position to film anything worth while.

Back in Perugia, I swapped gear and went out to film the vintage car show, the Coppa della Perugina: A Journey Through History and Passion. The first hour was shot on manual focus by mistake, so we'll see how it turned out. I then filmed an evening walk with the cars still parked along the route. Finished the night with pizza, fries and a beer on the main street — only 20.50 euro. 26,525 steps.

May 10th — Finishing Assisi in the Rain, Then Back to Rome

Drove back to Assisi in the morning to finish the walk I got blocked from on Saturday. It was raining, but I got it done and also filmed the underground. From there I drove to Rome, turned in the rental car, and checked into my hotel. Took an hour nap, then went out for Chinese food — fried rice, noodles, and chicken. Early night. 10,016 Steps

May 11th — One Last Big Filming Day in Rome

Started the day with breakfast at the hotel, then jumped on a bike and filmed an hour-long ride through Rome. From there I rode out to the Appian Way and filmed the full 7-mile walk down the ancient road — took the train back for 1.50 euro. The weather and traffic had improved so much by afternoon that I decided to re-film the entire bike ride from scratch. In the evening I went out with the Sony to film a walk starting at the Rose Garden, around the Colosseum, and back up to the Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore near my hotel — but when I reviewed it later I realized something had been on the lens the entire time. The whole walk is unusable. Salvaged the night with a gelato and fries. :) 30,765 Steps.

So, over 12 days, I walked 273,613 steps for an average of about 22,000 per day. I think the ghost town of Celleno was my favorite stop on the trip. I never had a chance to go back and fly my drone there unfortunately. It was raining on the day I planned to go back. The car show in Perugia was also a lot of fun to film. I pretty much ate pizza and gelato every day, and the occasional Chinese food. I am not sure how many hours of video I filmed, but I have about 3.7 TB of new files to transfer over to my server. I filmed everything on my original list except for Nari, which was supposed to be on May 10th, but it was raining and I also had to finish up the incomplete Assisi walk.

At the moment, I don't have any official plans for another trip. I may go somewhere again in June. In July, my family and I are going to Italy for a month to visit old friends, swim and eat our favorite foods. I'd like to go somewhere in September, but I don't have any plans for then either. If you have any suggestions, please let me know!

May 6th - A Lucky Break in Assisi (and Discovering Spello) Today, I drove from Perugia to Assisi to film inside the Papal Basilica of Saint Francis. I started at 9:30 and had the place almost to myself for nearly an hour. The town itself was cloudy and crews were setting up for a festival, so I decided to come back on Saturday when the light is better and the festival is in full swing. So instead, I drove to Spello, somewhere I'd never filmed before. I started filming without planning the...

May 4th -Exploring Orvieto I started the day by filming a walk around the base perimeter of Orvieto which will actually be placed at the end of the walking tour video. In Orvieto, I was able to film Saint Patrick’s Well, the Pozzo della Cava, the Torre del Moro, and the Orvieto Underground as well as a full city tour. Click the link below to see a map of the walk. Orvieto Map May 5th Ghost Towns and Roman Ruins I left my B&B in Orvieto and started driving to Perugia. On the way, I decided to...

Hi everyone, Thanks for signing up for my newsletter! I really appreciate it. I’m currently in Italy filming new walking tours, and I wanted to share a quick update from the first few days of the trip. I arrived in Rome and started filming right away with a tour inside the Pantheon. Over the next two days, I covered a huge portion of the city—filming around the Colosseum, inside the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, the Altar of the Fatherland, Piazza del Campidoglio, and more. One of the...
